Why DeGroote?

After completing a Life Science degree at McMaster University, I was unsure of my next steps. In pursuing a BSc, I had a solid understanding of where I did not see my career evolving and endless opportunities of where it could go. The MBA co-op program at DeGroote offered me the ability to pivot my career while gaining experience along the way. DeGroote’s business program is continuously evolving, partnering with distinguished firms to bring students meaningful internship opportunities. The staff at DeGroote is dedicated to the success of its students, and offer endless support in both academic and professional development.

Why an MBA?

I decided to pursue an MBA because I was interested in developing a well-rounded business acumen. I’ve always valued strategizing in collaborative environments, and an MBA would expose me to exactly that. By working alongside like-minded individuals, I would grow my network whilst further developing my skills and knowledge within business.

What surprised you about DeGroote?

DeGroote surprised me with its ability to build strong relationships in a virtual environment. After attending McMaster University for my Bachelors degree, I expected a similar inclusive environment from DeGroote. However, starting a school year virtually also meant that my expectations shifted – I didn’t think I could build meaningful relationships online. However, DeGroote offered a multitude of opportunities for students to get involved and network with each other and with people from other organizations.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone considering doing their MBA at DeGroote?

Start networking early! I attended MANY networking events during my first semester, and hosted a lot of coffee chats. You never know what might lead to an opportunity in the future, so network, network, network!

What has been the highlight of your DeGroote experience so far?

The highlight of my DeGroote experience so far has been my internship! I got an internship in a field that I never would have imagined and it has opened so many doors for me. I think that DeGroote’s strong partnerships with these firms allowed them to take a chance on me, and I wouldn’t have been able to pivot my career otherwise!
